The thrilling views of the Sienese hills, Tuscany

Everyone knows Siena for its historian Palio held twice a year, however this unique medieval village (in fact it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) has many attractions and I suggest you go there also at other times of the year, to discover its historical treasures with more calm and savor the food and wine specialties in the best trattorias.

The exciting views of the Sienese hills

I started my itinerary from an observation point a little distant from the historic center, to have a complete view of the whole city: I was on the Colle della Capriola, where the Basilica dell'Osservanza stands, not far from Siena, a less known but very characteristic church, built around 1490 and restored several times, since it was bombed during the Second World War. From here there is a wonderful view over the whole city, a sort of preview of what Siena offers while the Basilica represents an example of the Renaissance style that found its highest expression in these places.

After admiring the works preserved in the church, including the Polyptych by Andrea di Bartolo and the terracotta works by Andrea della Robbia, it's time to reach the heart of Siena, Piazza del Campo. It is known all over the world for its shell shape and for being the scenario in which the Palio takes place, here I climbed to the top of the Torre del Mangia, which in addition to being the bell tower of the Palazzo Comunale is also one of the tallest towers in Italy.

The bell of the tower rings only on the occasion of certain anniversaries, such as 25 April, 1 May and the inauguration of the academic year, over the centuries it has remained a reference point for all Sienese and climb all 400 steps it is a good way to retrace the history of this tower, which takes its name from the bell ringer Duccio il Mangiaguadagni, so nicknamed for his passion for good food.

Quality at a good price in a tavern

Among the many restaurants in the historic center, I chose Osteria del Gatto, which offers excellent dishes at affordable prices. I was pleasantly struck by the welcome as the kindness and friendliness of those who work at the Osteria are increasingly rare ingredients. The peculiarity is that here there is no fixed menu, because the chefs propose dishes based on the season, remaining faithful to the Sienese gastronomic tradition. This osteria, in via di San Marco, is an informal place where you can chat quietly with the owner and get advice on the daily specials.

I also recommend trying some wine, such as Chianti Colli Senesi, less alcoholic than the classic one, excellent to accompany first courses and cheeses, and Brunello di Montalcino, to be preferred with roasts and game.
