Treviso is a jewel city with many suggestive corners to discover. Ready to get lost in the most characteristic streets and to frequent the most famous taverns?
Treviso for me it meant a little discovery, I probably would never have gone there if I hadn't met a Treviso citizen, but it did and it was a nice little surprise.
Treviso is located about 30 km from Venice and rises in the middle of the Venetian Po Valley. It is an ideal destination for a relaxing day or two between aperitifs and walks in the center.
This city was born in one location rich in springs, which is why you will find gods in Treviso canals that make it seem like a little Venice (which was unexpected for me when I saw her for the first time).
It is one of those jewel cities where everything is so well kept that it might seem almost fake but, undeniably, it is really beautiful and very pleasant to attend.
I will recommend a two-day itinerary which will cross art, food and certainly also the excellent Spritz. Treviso can be easily explored on foot, just find a parking space or a hotel near the walls.
Day 1. The historic heart of Treviso
You can start your visit from Piazza dei Signori, which is the historical and most central heart of the city. Piazza dei Signori is the most important in Treviso and its name is due to the presence of the historic buildings of the ancient Treviso Lordship.
On the square there are some beautiful buildings or Palazzo del Podesta, with its 48 meter high Civic Tower (dating back to the XNUMXth century); Palazzo dei Trecento, the ancient seat of the Maggior Consiglio, visibly damaged by the bombings suffered in 1944; and finally the seventeenth century Praetorian Palace.
The loggia of the Palazzo dei Trecento
In the loggia of the Palazzo dei Trecento you will find the famous one Fountain of the Tits, which was once located near the Palazzo del Podestà but was removed after the fall of the Venetian Republic. Built in 1559 following a severe drought, the Fountain of the Tits drew white and red wine from the breasts, on the occasion of particular local festivals, under the domination of the Republic of Venice. There is also a copy found in the courtyard of Palazzo Zignoli always in Treviso.
Piazza dei Signori and the surrounding area are full of small bars, restaurants and interesting historic shops.
Once you have observed the square and its surroundings, cross the porch which is located between the Palazzo dei Trecento and the Prefecture, this is the access that will take you to the canals that cross the city. At this point, get lost in the surrounding alleys and it will be time for the pre-lunch aperitif.
Go and see the characteristic Pescheria, a small island where the fish market is held, and where you will still find the ancient wheel mills.
Go toOsteria Muscoli's, in Via Pescheria 23, right in front of the islet of the fish market.
If it's a nice day, take advantage of the tables overlooking the canal. Have a drink micro Spritz (less than € 3 each) with some tasty croutons (I recommend the brie and anchovies one, I will have eaten ten last time). Now you will be hungry, the real one, and it's time to choose one of the many excellent typical restaurants that are in the center.
Where to eat in Treviso
Among the many, hard to go wrong here, I recommend theOsteria ai Filodrammatici, in Via Filodrammatici 5, built on two floors with a small raised courtyard, where I ate some excellent cod made in different ways. Yummy and honest prices.
After lunch, take a stroll to dispose of, cross the canals, cross the bridge of San Francesco and immerse yourself in the most characteristic views of the city.
At this point, dedicate the afternoon to shopping, you will find a lot of interesting shops for both clothing and design, and wandering aimlessly, something I love.
When the aperitif time approaches, drop by Venegazzù cellar, in Piazza Ancillotto 2: famous for the aperitif in the center, with a nice outdoor area, and inside an infinity of delicious crostini (try the radicchio one which is incredible and the lard one).
Then it will come time for dinner and, if you want to try a little less tavern and more refined place, go to the Trattoria San Tommaso, in Borgo Mazzini 59. You eat divinely and the place, with its riverside location, is really nice. And if time permits, dine on the terrace.
For after dinner, have a good drink at theHe's used to it, in Vicolo Pescherie 9, alternative and at the same time cool the right, excellent drinks. I know they also do a great Sunday brunch but I've never tried it.
Now that you are stuffed up to your neck with food and drink, go to bed.
Day 2. The most characteristic corners of Treviso
Drop by today to see the Duomo, inside which you will find a beautiful painting by Titian: The altarpiece of the Annunziata.
La Church of S. Nicolò instead it is famous for its gothic and imposing style.
Then move on from Buranelli canal, a really beautiful corner of Treviso, super-characteristic.
Now head to Viale Burchiellati and reach Porta San Tommaso which you will recognize from the beautiful facade decorated with trophies and coats of arms and a large central lion. It is probably the most beautiful Venetian gate in Treviso.
From here you can access the walk along the ancient walls that surround the city.
Along the walls there are very beautiful gardens: you will feel like you are in a small paradise, it is a piece of green lawn where you will find geese, various animals and above all a lot of beautiful bunnies jumping everywhere.
Back inside the walls, for a snack, an aperitif, or a quick lunch on your feet, go to theHostaria from the Naneti, in Vicolo Broli 2, near Piazza dei Signori, the classic Venetian tavern where you can drink the shadow of wine. Enjoy excellent sandwiches with cold cuts, as well as mozzarella in carrozza, stuffed in various ways.
Alternatively, go toOsteria dalla Gigia, in Via Barberia 20, here too wine at will, sandwiches with porchetta and the famous mozzarella in carrozza.
Instead, spend the afternoon in Ca 'dei Carraresi, home to really interesting events and exhibitions.
It is a medieval building located in the middle of the historic center, near the Pescheria, and for years it has been home to important exhibitions, conferences, events dedicated to vintage and much more. Whatever time of year you go there, you will surely find something beautiful to see.
