Often we aspire to what is distant, without appreciating what is close. And this is also frequently the case for travel. Whether it's a trip out of town or a two-week trip, I always think of distant destinations, famous cities of art hundreds of kilometers from where I live. But this time no, I decided to visit the city of well Trento, the provincial capital of Trentino. I lived it during my university years, but never visited carefully: I only recently discovered how much this city has to offer. Come, let's discover it together by dedicating a day to it.
How to get around in Trento
Trento, the provincial capital of Trentino, a university city, nowadays famous for its Christmas markets, is a small jewel to which to dedicate at least one day for its visit. Not being very extensive you can easily walk around it, moreover the historic center is closed to traffic.
It can be reached easily by bus, train and car. The stations are side by side and very close to the historic center. If you opt for the latter solution, just outside the center there are ample parking lots, both paid and unpaid.
1. Piazza Duomo: heart of the city
Once there, the first thing to visit is certainly the splendid Piazza Duomo, the beating and historical heart of this city. At the center of the square stands the splendid Fountain of Neptune with the nearby Palazzo Pretorio and the Civic Tower. Next to it stands the imposing Cathedral of San Vigilio, who is also the patron saint of the city. To frame the square there are the splendid facades of the Cazuffi-Rella Homes.
2. Piazza Fiera: the history of the city
We leave the main square to head towards another one: Piazza Fiera. Various events and fairs are usually organized here, so it could be a good place to take a break and enjoy a coffee and then continue to Cesare Battisti Square and immerse yourself in the history of the city. In fact, a short route to discover the underground city Tridentum. Here the remains of a Roman road and the mosaics of a very well preserved house are very visible.
3. Buonconsiglio Castle: symbolic place
We return to the surface and head towards another symbol of the city: the Buonconsiglio Castle. Located on a hill just outside the city walls, it was the residence of the Prince Bishops of Trento, while now it is home to a museum.
4. The legend of Palazzo Galasso
After spending a couple of hours discovering the Castle, we resume the way to the historic center to admire the beautiful and disturbing Palazzo Galasso, also known as Devil's Palace. In fact, legend has it that it was the latter who built it personally, in a single night.
We continue until we reach the Church of S. Maria Maggiore, which, with its frescoed vaults, will fill your eyes with indescribable beauty.
5. Sardagna: a splendid view
How about ending the day with a splendid view over the city of Trento? Here you are satisfied! There fast cable car that connects Trento with the small village of Sardagna is just right for us. In a few minutes you reach 600 meters and a panoramic terrace that will make you enjoy a splendid view of the city.
