Alberobello, low cost advice on what and where to eat and where to sleep in a trullo in Valle D'Itria. Why the trulli, their history and how we live today in Alberobello, for an unforgettable holiday in Puglia.
I finally start writing about Alberobello, because I finally managed to visit it. I felt like a magical world as soon as I saw the trulli. Of course, I had seen them before, on my last trip to the Valle D'Itria, but I had not had the opportunity to pass through this beautiful place that I must say, it literally stole my heart.
Alberobello is not very large, at least the central part, the one dedicated to the trulli, but exploring it and also exiting the most famous shopping street, where the boutiques are located right inside the trulli, are located enchanting views, houses where you can peek inside and even some typical homes which are left open to allow all visitors to admire how people once lived here, leaving a small tip.
What to eat in Alberobello
Together with Italica Incoming we did not go to a real restaurant, in fact in Alberobello I had the pleasure of tasting all the typical products of the place thanks to theTholos wine shop which is located in Via Monte San Michele, at number 20.
The wine shop offers beyond two hundred labels of Apulian wines, from Negroamaro to Primitivo di Manduria passing through Saraceno and Salice Salentino. What is surprising, besides obviously the quantity of the labels and the quality of the products, is the passion with which Gino, the owner talks about his Puglia and its products. Here it is possible to make a real journey, both gastronomic and historical, through the world of Apulian viticulture.
Among the best things tasted, the salted fried broad beans, i wine taralli, mini taralli with turnip tops, the classic Apulian focaccia, mozzarella and the more you put it.
Where to sleep in Alberobello
I didn't sleep in Alberobello, I stayed for three nights at Barion Hotel and from there I quietly visited Alberobello, Bari, Matera and Ostuni. However, if someone wants to try to stay in the city of trulli, there are some solutions that can be considered. Among these I discovered a Widespread hotel, Trulli Holiday. A widespread hotel, for the uninitiated, is a system of accommodation and tourism that has existed for a few years now.
In practice it allows those who do not want to stay in a hotel, but not even in an isolated apartment, to combine the two, staying in a historic center and in refurbished houses, where the reception is unique, like in a hotel, but the rooms are divided between the various houses in the town. So it is also in Alberobello, where the trulli are part of a single structure, the reception is one, the breakfast room also, but each guest has his own trullo available.
Short history of Alberobello
One thing that surprised me a lot about Alberobello is his history. I never expected that the trulli were "an invention" (basically) to avoid paying taxes. In the XNUMXth century, an uninhabited land was assigned to the Count of Conversano. Here little by little the trulli were built, dry construction, without mortar, so that the houses could be pulled down quickly in case of checks, an effective method to avoid taxes on new settlements imposed by the Kingdom of Naples.
Thus were born the trulli, structures that are associated and those of Japan, whose city of Shirakawa Go is associated with the Apulian city of Alberobello.
