The new market in the middle of Bologna, a new place to eat well and relax in the city center, here are the timetables and advice for an afternoon or a lunch break of relaxation and taste.
Il Middle Market in Bologna it is the oldest market in the city, but it has only recently reopened its doors, after six years of closure. A historic place in Bologna, it is perhaps the most representative, with the Mercato delle Erbe, of the local food and wine culture.
The market is located a few hundred meters from Piazza Maggiore, you enter from Via Clavature and come out in via Pescherie Vecchie, immersed in the suggestive district of the Quadrilatero, one of the oldest in the city. It is the first covered market in Bologna and since the Middle Ages it has been the seat of trade and the culinary tradition of the Bolognese capital.
You can find here everything that can tease your mind and, above all, your palate. From bread to the pizza, From homemade pasta to the pastry shop, come on cold cuts ai cheese, from meat to fried fish, to wine and craft beer. Here you can both buy and savor on one of the many wooden tables that occupy the central part of the market.
On a structural level, the space is divided into three floors: on the ground floor you can find the corners dedicated to food and gastronomy, on the first floor there is the pizzeria and, finally, in the basement there is the space dedicated to drinking and, in particular, to craft beer.
In addition to the various more typical local specialties, I recommend you try the fried fish on the spot and the bag of cutlet, a real freshly cooked cutlet, cut into strips and perfect for a quick meal to have while walking.
An interesting project in 2014 saw the recovery and renewal of this ancient market, recreating the interior of the same according to its nineteenth-century plan, for a total of 740 square meters. Among the peculiarities of the space there are also the two large glass skylights placed in the center of the facades and recovered from the original market which appears today as a space wedged between the past and the contemporary.
On the side of the road that passes from via Clavature, right next to the Church of Santa Maria della Vita, you will also find some seats outside, on some pleasant red tables and chairs.
The market is open from Monday to Sunday, seven days a week, from 8.30 until late midnight. If you pass by Bologna, take a leap. If you are particularly lucky you may come across some tasting event, the perfect opportunity to taste some more delights.
