Maria Pia beach, Catalan culinary influences and the Coral Museum: curious to discover such a culturally diverse city?
Alghero, on the north-western coast of Sardinia, is an unforgettable city, culturally diverse and waiting to be discovered.
We recently returned from a wonderful one holiday in Sardinia, precisely ad Alghero, and I can't wait to recommend them three things to do absolutely.
Between the beach, the sea, excellent cuisine and cultures to explore, in Alghero you will certainly not be bored.
Let's see together the three activities not to be missed in Alghero!
1. Sea, sun and Maria Pia beach
Like every self-respecting part of Sardinia, even in Alghero there is an enchanting sea! The beaches are many. This year we visited the Maria Pia beach because we were staying in a residence a few minutes walk away. To access the beach you have to cross a pine forest.
In front of the pine forest, crossing the road there is a large parking lot where you can park your car.
Maria Pia beach is one of the most famous in Alghero. White sand, crystal clear sea and few crowds. Along this beach, the choice is wide, you will find bathing establishments that alternate with free beaches.
The average prices for renting an umbrella and two sunbeds range from 20 to 25 euros from morning to evening, 13-14 euros for half a day.
Really beautiful beautiful, if you go to Alghero do not miss it!
2. Eat Paella and creme brulee
Two cultures converge in Alghero: the Sardinian and the Catalan. This location has indeed been for a long time Spanish colony. This is why there are two official languages here, the Sardinian and Catalan. And that's why in Alghero it is possible to find many typical dishes of Spanish cuisine. Paella for example. In Alghero I ate the best of all time! A very tasty paella mare e monti, consisting of rice, curry, chicken and seafood. And the best part is that you will find it in any restaurant, both in the center and outside the city.
For dessert I tried a delicious Catalan cream. Sweet at the right point. What can I say, it was like being in Spain!
3. Visit the Coral Museum
The Alghero coast is also called Riviera del Corallo. The abysses in this place of the sea are full of them.
This is why in Alghero, in addition to finding many boutiques specialized in the sale of this material, you cannot miss the visit to the Coral Museumor. The museum exhibits photos and coral pieces that tell its main characteristics: the history of its discovery, which are the main processing techniques, how it is recognized and fished in the abyss, which are the most valuable pieces.
The museum is usually open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and admission costs 5 euros per person.
Are you ready to leave for this fascinating city?
