What to visit in Florence in the San Lorenzo district? Obviously the new Central Market, but also the Palazzo Medici Riccardi and the Church of San Lorenzo, read the guide in the post.
People crossing the district of San Lorenzo a Firenze he does it especially for the tourist market. But this part of the city is really significant, because it was the neighborhood of Medici family.
Cosimo the Elder decided to settle in this point, on via Larga (now via Cavour), having Michelozzo design his palace. Not far away Church of San Lorenzo it was the Medici “parish”, a church of very pure Renaissance lines, the work of Brunelleschi which was followed by Michelangelo's interventions with the Library and the Chapels.
The whole square has recently been cleared of stalls. The market was part of the context, but it had completely distorted the perspective on the beautiful church, with its unfinished facade. Now that the stalls are gone - they have been moved to Piazza del Mercato Centrale and other areas - the view embraces everything, from the facade to the entrance of the Laurentian Medici Library, an enchanting Renaissance jewel that is worth visiting.
Following the nave of San Lorenzo along via dell'Ariento you will also find the building of Central Market, a place not to be missed and of which I speak in another post.
Palazzo Medici Riccardi it is a beautiful place to visit, with monumental districts and a chapel, known as the Magi, entirely frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli (open every day except Wednesday, from 9 to 18). The Galleria delle Carrozze created in the building connects via Cavour with via Ginori: exhibitions or trade fairs are held there, for example in November and December there will be new events, called Terre Fiorenti, which showcase the best of the local food and wine sector and artifacts of artistic craftsmanship.
All the events in the Gallery are at free entry and therefore suitable for tourists looking for low cost.
In the period preceding the Christmas holidays there are interesting occasions inside Shopping for “charity” purposes: the legality market, with products from lands confiscated from the mafia - ends on 9 December, and the Emergency shop, with objects and gifts for all budgets (until 24 December).
Then the advice is, leaving the Gallery, to walk the lively via Ginori, where there are interesting shops and to take a delicious stop ... At number 55R is Coccole, it is one chocolate where to drink the best hot chocolate in Florence, at least according to my palate, without being plucked (costs € 2,50), comfortably seated at the table in a welcoming environment. There are also tea selections, unusual but inviting pastries.
