Ready to discover the beauty of the paintings of Piero della Francesca, one of the most important artists of the Renaissance? From February 2016 until the end of June at the civic museums of San Domenico a Forlì a suggestive pictorial exhibition will be set up that will revolve around the most important works created by the Tuscan artist born in Borgo Sansepolcro at the beginning of the fifteenth century (1415-1492), in Tuscany.

Up to now, the museums of San Domenico have not made an event wrong, just think of the exhibitions on Liberty, Boldini and today the latest exhibition, which is gaining acclaim from critics and the public, is that of Steve McCurry, Icons and Women, open until 10 January 2016.

The exhibition will start on 13 February and will have as title "Piero della Francesca. Investigation of a myth". We are talking about a real bet since such an approach has never been attempted in an exhibition: that is to collect an adequate number of works by the Tuscan artist and then compare them with those of contemporary artists such as Domenico Veneziano, Paolo Uccello, Beato Angelico, Andrea Castagno and others. Not only this, in fact the exhibition also wants to demonstrate the influence the work of Piero della Francesca had on painters such as Melozzo da Forlì, Giovanni Bellini, Francesco del Cossa, Luca Signorelli and Antoniazzo Marano.

The exhibition will also discuss'Pierfranciscan echoes', which resound in Degas, Seurat and Signac, in post-impressionism, then in the purism of Puvis de Chavannes, the experiments of Odilon Redon and, above all, the geometric views of CĂ©zanne. In fact, it is no coincidence that Piero della Francesca is considered the inventor of perspective or in any case he was the one who, better than others, applied it.

The twentieth-century fortune of the artist is then entrusted to the Italians Guidi, CarrĂ , Donghi, De Chirico, Casorati, Morandi, Funi, Campigli, Ferrazzi, Sironi compared with fundamental foreign artists such as Le Corbusier, Balthus and Edward Hopper who handed over the inheritance di Piero to full and universal modernity.

Piero della Francesca he was an emblematic painter, rediscovered and enhanced only from the early twentieth century thanks to the work of the English Roger Fry, Duncan Grant and the Bloomsbury group. Numerous projects for territorial enhancement have been born and are still being born around the figure of the Tuscan artist, just think of Terre di Piero and Renaissance views of Montefeltro, of which I have already spoken here.

Another reason for pride, entirely personal since I am from Rimini, is the fact that for the promotion of the exhibition they have chosen one of the most emblematic profiles painted by the artist, namely that of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, lord of Rimini until 1468. Inside the Malatesta Temple of Rimini you can in fact discover the fresco painted by Piero della Francesca in 1451 and placed in the fourth chapel on the right. It will be very easy for you to recognize the profile of the Malatesta.
