I Gardens of Ninfa can be visited on a day trip for those who live in Rome and surroundings, or are in the area as a tourist.
The gardens were built on the ruins of a medieval town, Ninfa, of which there are still several suggestive remains, such as a part of the castle, the walls, parts of churches and civil buildings.
The medieval village passed ownership between various noble families in the area, including the Colonna and the Annibaldi, until it ended up in the Caetani family, but was destroyed and abandoned at the end of the 1300s.
We will have to wait until 1920 to see Ninfa resurrect and return to new life, with the intervention of the heirs of the Caetani family, who reclaimed the area, restored some ruins, and began planting roses, cypresses, beech trees and other exotic flowers and plants they brought from their travels. The basic idea was to create an Anglo-Saxon-inspired garden, romantic, without rigid geometries.
Thanks to the time, care, and artistic sensitivity of the women of the family, Ninfa is today a magnificent garden unique in the world, created where the swamp once reigned.
Remains of the medieval town, plants from all over the world, river, lake and streams, contribute to making the gardens an almost magical and timeless place, which gives its best in spring, when the plants are in bloom and the park is presents in all its glory.
The gardens of Ninfa are open only on specific days of the year (better check the updated calendar) and only with guided tours, to preserve the delicate balance of the park. The ticket costs 12 € and includes entrance and guide.
How to get to the Gardens of Ninfa
The Gardens of Ninfa are located in Province of Latina, between the municipalities of Norma and Sermoneta. The area is not well served by public transport, so most visitors arrive by their own means. Alternatively, you can reach the nearest station (Latina) and then take a taxi for the remaining 9 km.
