La Forgotten Railways Day is an event that takes place on foot along the tracks of disused railways. It happens on Sunday 3 March throughout Italy and in Campania, the Cai of Salerno, invites you to relive the ancient Sicignano degli Alburni - Lagonegro section. The Vallo di Diano railway, inaugurated on 30 December 1886 and stopped since 2 May 1987, is the ideal location to tackle this type of route.
The appointment is at 9.15 am at Salerno station from where you will leave for Sicignano along the line to Potenza (to participate you need to book by contacting Antonello Sica - 331 3599 053 and Ornella Carusi - 335 6629 199) and from here by bus you will reach Petina station: at 11.45 am the trekking along 6,6 kilometers of railway track. In about three and a half hours of walking you will cover the section from Petina (at km 11 905) to the Lontrano viaduct (at km 18 500) which with thirty curved arches embraces the valley. From Valle del Lontrano with a bus service, hikers will reach Pertosa where the stop for lunch and a visit to the Grotte dell 'Angelo. The return to Salerno will be by bus and train, arrival time 20.11.
