What to see in a day in Chioggia

What to see in Chioggia in one day, where it is but above all what to see in a single day of travel to discover the wonderful city of Veneto.

Chioggia is a pretty town that stands on a group of small islands in the southernmost part of the Venice lagoon. But don't worry, you can easily reach it by car.

I advise you to follow the indications for Sottomarina and look for parking in this city. In this way you avoid the city center of Chioggia and there are more chances to find free parking.

Once you leave the car in Sottomarina continue on foot, a nice walk never hurts! You can cross the Translagunare bridge until you reach a second one. This is what gives access to the center. It is a swing bridge that is used to pass the large fishing boats twice a day, in the morning at 7 and in the afternoon at 14. Otherwise, if you want to lengthen the route, you can follow the entire pedestrian cycle that runs along the lagoon until you reach Porta Garibaldi, the entrance to the city.

The Cathedral of Chioggia

Beyond the door you will find the splendid Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. This was destroyed by a fire in 1623 and the reconstruction began the following year. The outer wall of the cathedral is very simple, made entirely of "bricks". While the interior is very clear with various frescoes and a splendid chapel with a golden dome. Outside, right next to the cathedral is its bell tower.

Bell tower of Sant'Andrea di Chioggia

This bell tower is famous for having the oldest tower clock in the world. Inside there is a museum, open only on Sundays from 10.30 to 12.30 with free admission.

Corso del Popolo of Chioggia

It is the main avenue of Chioggia that starts from Porta Garibaldi and extends to Piazza Vigo. Stroll admiring the beautiful Venetian-style buildings that line the avenue. If you feel tired, no problem, stop in one of the many bars that line the course for a good aperitif.

Piazza Vigo in Chioggia

It is a small square at the very end of Corso del Popolo. From here there is a beautiful view of the lagoon, Forte S. Felice di Sottomarina and the island of Pellestrina. In the center of the square there is a marble column with a statue of the lion of San Marco at the top, as in Venice but small in size and for this good-naturedly renamed "el gato de ciosa". Next to it is the bridge of the same name which offers some truly suggestive views of the canal.

Church of San Domenico of Chioggia

This Church is famous because inside there is a gigantic Crucifix. Regarding this there is a legend that tells the story of a fisherman who found the giant head of a Christ and decided to take it to the authorities. But the following night he found her again in the same place so he took her to the parish priest. The latter decided to put it back in the Church and asked a carpenter to build the rest of the effigy in proportion to the head.

Palazzo Grassi in Chioggia

This palace belonged to a noble family. When they moved to Venice the house was used as a hospital and was subsequently given in concession to the Municipality. Today it is the branch of marine biology of the University of Padua. In addition, the marine museum has been set up inside with various interactive itineraries for children. In addition there is preserved a basking shark caught in the Adriatic Sea.
